Background

Abdur Rashid Khan Thakur Foundation (ARKTF) is a well-meaning national development organization in the southern part of Bangladesh, founded in 2001 with intensive focused on charity and relief (social welfare) for the most vulnerable and destitute people affected by the social and natural disaster. The Foundation has been working in solidarity with poor, excluded and marginalized segments to end poverty and injustice in the different parts of Bangladesh. Founder of Abdur Rashid Khan Thakur Foundation is Mr. Abdur Rashid Khan Thakur, a renowned govt. official as well as social worker, with a view to promote the socio-economic status of the rural, urban, under-privileged and demoralized people living in the society, where justice will be honored and every citizen will be able to get  rightful shares of the resources. From the inception Abdur Rashid Khan Thakur Foundation aims to improve the socio-economic condition of the beneficiaries in the working area especially to establish the women and child rights. Abdur Rashid Khan Thakur Foundation performed for a positive change likely economical, cultural, women empowerment, human rights establishment by facing different types of challenges and risks including prolonged conflict, confrontation, natural disaster, social trend and tendencies, fundamentalism etc. In this connection Abdur Rashid Khan Thakur Foundation set up a target of components including Community Mobilization and Institutional Strengthening for upholding human rights specially child rights, Education, Income Generating Activities, Health Hygiene and Nutrition, WatSan, Micro Credit and Emergency response. In every component, ARKTF had a good achievement and success finding better scope of work opportunities in working area among other success providers.

 

In the view of the problems and to contribute for establishing poverty free and just society Abdur Rashid Khan Thakur Foundation has taken different development engagement with community people and other stakeholders by receiving their supports. Abdur Rashid Khan Thakur Foundation started its activities from Gopalganj district. Over the 21 years, Abdur Rashid Khan Thakur Foundation has been reorganized as a development partner in liberating and empowering the poor people of Bangladesh.  Abdur Rashid Khan Thakur Foundation has been performed to make positive changes of the lives and livelihoods of the poor and marginalized people through taking different initiatives including children rights, health hygiene and nutrition, education, social forestry, skill development and capacity building of youths, protection and prevention mechanisms of violence against women and children, anit-trafficking, leadership development etc.

Mission

  • To work for the people and with the people irrespective of religion, caste, ethnicity, creed and belief who are in any form of marginalization and exclusion

Principles of the organization

  • Avoiding sex, color, caste and creed, the society is completely charitable, beneficial, educational, non-political, non-communal and non-profitable. It would be a non-discriminated society regarding nation, color, creed and sex.
  • Only the almighty shall be the basis of all actions of the organization.
  • The member and the staffs of the organization must abide by some values and cultures that would be developed by the organization and the values and cultures would be added to the human resource policy.

Target people/beneficiary

Vulnerable, marginalized, hardcore poor, destitute, downtrodden, harassed people particularly women and children are the target people of Abdur Rashid Khan Thakur Foundation.

Overall experience

To secure the livelihood of the marginalized and vulnerable people, Abdur Rashid Khan Thakur Foundation has been implementing different types of development program since its inception. Abdur Rashid Khan Thakur Foundation has been supporting the beneficiaries by implementing the following programs-

  • Strengthen, organize and activate local community people against injustice.
  • Social and Human Rights Development through Education project.
  • Welfare development through Primary Health Care project and awareness activities on HIV/AIDS.
  • Relief and Rehabilitation project, Hard core poor Women & Children development project.
  • Economic development through Agriculture project, Poultry and Livestock project and Micro Credit.
  • Fish Farming and Fish Hatchery Project, Demonstration of sustainable Aquaculture project and Income Generating Activities.
  • Advocacy, networking and lobbying with GO/NGOs, Donors, Media, and Civil Society at policy level as well as implementation level.

Governance of Abdur Rashid Khan Thakur Foundation

The organization has approved constitution under the social welfare department. The governance of Abdur Rashid Khan Thakur Foundation has been ensured following this constitution and other policies, (Human Resource Policy, Financial Policy, Child Protection Policy and Gender Policy- The logistic and procurement policy has been addressed in the financial policy). Abdur Rashid Khan Thakur Foundation has an active and supportive Executive Committee. It has General Body of 21 members. It is very balanced Executive Committee with a composition of Teachers, Cultural Activists, and Women rights Activists and Social Workers. The present Executive Committee is very support oriented especially during the crisis period.

The Executive Committee Members have a stake in the administrative and financial affairs, besides policy making and strategic management, which is the one hand ensures financial transparency and accountability as an overarching role.

The EC Members are involved in Staff Recruitment and Performance Appraisal for maintaining transparency. The Executive Committee (EC) Members are elected every 2 years from the General Body in a very transparent and democratic process. Basically the EC is well constituted democratically to protect the organization and also to ensure and practice governance for running an organization more efficiently.

Executive Committee will further give following efforts to improve the Governance of the Organization.

  • Abdur Rashid Khan Thakur Foundation taking further planned initiatives for creating common and clear understanding within the EC members about their strategic role in the governance of the organization.
  • Participate in developing the Organizational Vision, Mission and future Strategies.
  • Support the Executive Director and assess her performance.
  • Participate in the development of strategic planning.
  • Support in identifying and managing adequate resources for Abdur Rashid Khan Thakur Foundation and deal with the Donors.

MELA (Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning & Accountability)

Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) are the innermost parts of ARKTF’s development initiatives in tracking programme performance and progress, capturing forward-looking strategies and lessons for management. There is an increasing demand, internally and externally, on demonstrating program performance and quality changes. In this consideration, Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) unit  has developed M&E system and tools and is providing technical and strategic supports to program management in understanding program progress, the process of maximizing impacts, learning and critical reflections and the way of improving operations. To improve the quality of program delivery, M&E unit conducts different types of study survey, assessment to provide information and feedback to the ARKTF management. The M&E unit is also providing capacity development supports on M&E issues to program staffs so that they can ensure their better contribution in collecting, managing and analyse data and information systematically.
